For my corporation post wanted to pick another clothing company. We read how Patagoina ran their operations and I was curious how other clothing companies would run how they do things. I tried to find a big company but figured other people would be doing theirs on Nike or Vans, so I tried to find one a little more low key. I decided to pick Fruit of the Loom. Fruit of the Loom makes undershirts, printable T-shirts, men, boys, and women underwear and some activewear. I believe most people have worn a Fruit of the Loom article of clothing at one time in their life or another. I was very curious on how the company runs since is it’s a larger corporation but no one really pays that much attention to them. Fruit of the Loom “ utilizes their expertise and resources to run a competitive and profitable business, while at the same time adding value to the communities in which they operate by preserving our planet’s natural resources and empowering our people”. This is interesting because I wholeheartedly wasn’t really expecting to find any sort of environmental type work of any kind. They also claim on their website that they are committed to working with our employees, customers, and suppliers to design products, processes, equipment, and packaging that are environmentally friendly and economically viable. This shows what kind of company they run and their values to the consumer, employee and environment. The company got off to a good start in 1871 when it first started and it just took off from their into the 1990’s where it all went south and they had to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company bounced back though and were able to begin making profits again and has well ever since. Fruit of the Loom is a little success story, showing no matter how hard it may get there still is a way to overcome. Fruit of the Loom is now a global underwear and casualwear business, employing more than 28,000 people worldwide. The company has made many different donations and set up many organizations help people like: supporting technology and English classrooms in El Salvador. Donating school supplies to kids in need, and dontaing 55,000 packages of t-shirts and underwear to the flood victims of Baton Rouge, LA. They market all of their items to all sorts of people, big to small and young to old. I think that fruit of the Loom is doing everything a big corporation can do to help reduce emissions and help the quality of the environment. Looking into this project was definitely an eye opener to how much we consume. Each one of these big companies uses lots of resources to keep up the demand of the consumer, and there are hundreds and hundreds of these coma[pnies out there. It will take a little more than just some big corporation to make some small tweaks to their operations and call themselves environmentally friendly. I think we are at the point where real laws need to be set into place or else out efforts to save the world completely are ruined.
The audience I was addressing in this meme would I guess be for the Baby Boomers although I doubt they’ll know what it means, but also for the younger generations to let them know it is up to us to help the planet because the baby boomers won’t be around to help. The message appeals to the generation getting off scot free by leaving the problems they started to the younger generations. I think climate change is a very big and growing issue in the world and our window of time for lessening the blow of the inevitable is closing. I believe memes are a new form of communication among younger generations and have the power to actually pass very important and real messages.
When first being assigned the rhetorical meme assignment I wanted to pick a meme that was equally funny, clever, and brought up an important issue within our society. I decided to use a Spongebob template for my meme. Spongebob is arguably the most meme-centric show that has yet aired, with countless memes after memes being created after is funny and bizarre scenes and characters. The template I chose was a picture of spongebob getting up and leaving the room with the caption “Ight, Imma Head Out”. The issue I decided to use if climate change and how the “baby boomer” generation is getting away with trashing the planet without having to help fix the problem. The meme reads “Baby boomers when the planet starts warming up” with the picture and caption below “ight, imma head out”.

1). What have you taken away/ what can you tell me about Rhetoric?
What I took away from rhetoric is that it is used just about everywhere. From advertisements to everyday conversations people use rhetoric to persuade people all the time. No matter what appeal they are using whether it’s: Ethos, Logos, or Pathos, there is a good chance it will he make you feel a certain way about their subject.
2). How does rhetoric relate to critical thinking/reading?
Rhetoric ties into critical thinking and reading all the time, sometimes you have to look past all the rhetoric they are using to see the truth in their argument. Authors use rhetoric as a tool to manipulate and make their audience feel a certain way.

Many TV shows used Rhetoric to influence you to feel a certain way just like politicians do. If you are watching a show like Hoarders it is going to use pathos to make you feel gross about what and who you are watching and maybe will motivate you to clean your house. If you watch a documentary on someone or something it might use Logos to draw you into the subject and make you want to watch more about it. Maybe if watch a political debate or presidential speech they will use ethos to provide authority and then back it up or support it with logos or pathos. Many ads use pathos to help persuade you to buy something. Say your car is a real piece of junk and you see an ad for a new car that’s supposed to make you feel good and look good, you might want to buy it because you don’t have a cool car.

She says that the first place to look for rhetorical situation is in the context. She gives an example that you pick out your clothes based on where you are going or who you are seeing, those things on why you picked out your clothes is context. There are three parts to understanding the context in a rhetorical moment: exigence, audience and constraints. Exigence is the circumstance or condition, audience is obviously relating.
For my article I decided to write about an article off of Patagonia’s “Cleanest Line” posts. We were allowed to leave class early on Friday to attend the Environment Walk Out if we chose too, and as much as I wanted to go me and my sister had plans already. With that being said, I read an article about a little boy who had received a 13 year old hand-me-down winter snow jacket for his snowboarding season. This reminded me of when I was a little kid and I would receive my older sisters green L.L.Bean jacket for when I was learning how to snowboard. It was a faded green with some rips in the cuffs and about 15 different pockets inside. Once I outgrew it we gave it to some family friends, who’s daughter used it for years, and then her brother used it next. The article touches on the idea that if kids receive new clothes, even if it isn’t brand new it would be new to them and they will still be happy to receive it? When I received that jacket I thought it was the coolest thing I had right at the moment. I think kids can get to caught up in always wanting brand new stuff all the time even if the old is still good. Sure I see the point of an only child getting brand new all the time but brothers and sister and friends have always traded and handed on. I believe it is important for people to learn how to get the most out of the item they buy and not be so wasteful
When reading the article “Backpacks and Briefcases” I learned that rhetoric is a very useful and important way to persuade someone or even use in an argument. They went over an ad and also addressed the three main rhetoric types: Pathos, Logos and Ethos, each bring a diverse and unique way of presenting information or arguing a point. Out of the rhetorical triangle I believe that most ads appeal to Pathos, which is the appeal to emotion. For example you see an ad on TV for a new car and it shows a good looking person getting into it and they take off and go to their nice house and you think about your car and how much of a piece of garbage it is and it makes you want a new car immediately. You see this a lot of the time with the sad pet commercials where the dogs and cats are in the pound, behind bars, with the sad piano music playing in the background. This is clearly appealing to your emotions and makes you want to donate to the pound or stop whatever you are doing and go adopt one. The second, Logos, relates mostly to logic and facts, you can see this in documentaries. They just provide you with the facts to let you make the decision on your own. They can also just provide one sided facts too, which doesn’t allow you to see the full picture. The last, Ethos, results to using authority. You can commonly find this in speeches and presidential debates. They use the power they have to persuade people onto their side. No matter what persuasion you come across you can mostly categorize it one of Aristotle’s three rhetoric types: Pathos, Logos, Ethos.
I learned from the article that Geography doesn’t just mean land. It means everything that is going on in that space like, governments, religious organizations and trade partnerships. Geography can be involving maps or even different types of ecosystems. The article talked about ancient geography, and how the term actually comes from the greek prefix geo which means earth. Some of the first maps made were of ancient Greece. I think it would be cool to compare the very first maps of Greece vs the final satellite maps of Greece and see the similarities and differences. Geography asks and answers questions like how certain places got to be formed how they are and how did a certain species of animal get to that region. People can use geography to track down many different things from, economic forces to the different history and location of cities and countries. One of the cool things I read that they could use geography for is to find and track down disease outbreaks. With this information it makes it easier to find where it is spreading and to stop it, or even prevent it from spreading all together. Another interesting thing they can use geography for is to see how humans have altered the environment of the earth to fully understand the impact of human activities. Overall geography, no matter when you look at it, can tell a story. Whether or not that story is good or bad it will provide facts and evidence no matter what you outlook is. Geography is the earth’s own biography and it will continue to write until the very end.
For my reading response, I choose an article by Hans Ludwig. The article is titled “Block Party: A Celebration in the Long Overdue Sierra Snow,” article explains how the long awaited end of the drought was brought to the California Sierra Nevada mountains. The heavy snowfall is recalled by a Mammoth California citizen who recalls the excitement of those 3 months in 2018. Being an avid snowboarder myself I remember the winter quite well. My father and I regularly visit Bear Valley Ski Resort and that March in 2018 was the best snow I had ever experienced. Maybe it was because the great snow was following a 3 year drought but the snow seemed to bring everyone together for the season. When the snow falls in that great of quantity it shows that mother nature has no regard humans and still reigns supreme above everyone. The snow along with bringing happy faces brought fresh lines in the snow. Nothing can quite compare to surfing across a fresh blanket of snow, looking back and seeing one single line follow behind you in the fresh snow. Although the heavy amounts of snow bring lots of work for the people who live in it, it is essential for the Sierra Nevada snowpack. Overall for the benefit of myself and the benefit of all the world the Sierra Nevada needs to and should keep experiencing heavy snowfall like it saw in the early months of 2018. The Patagonia website provides a vast selection of articles which includes all sorts of information on different outdoor subjects.
